Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 has once again shattered records, raising over $2.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. This marks an unprecedented fifth consecutive year that the event has exceeded this remarkable fundraising milestone, solidifying its status as a powerhouse in the world of charity speedrunning.
From January 14 to 21, speedrunning enthusiasts from across the globe descended upon Pittsburgh for the first-ever in-person speedrunning showcase. The result was an astounding $2,515,720 raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Notably, this achievement signifies the first time in Games Done Quick history that a marathon series has achieved over $2.5 million in five consecutive years, with AGDQ 2020 setting the stage at $3,164,002. AGDQ 2022 still boasts the series and overall GDQ donation record at an impressive $3,442,033.
The success story extends beyond Awesome Games Done Quick, with the entire Games Done Quick organization celebrating its 20th consecutive event raising over $1 million for charity and its 14th event surpassing the $2 million mark. AGDQ 2022 continues to hold both the series and overall donation record at $3,442,033.
This edition of AGDQ was not only a triumph in fundraising but also a significant reunion. For the first time since January 2020, participants gathered physically to share the thrill of speedrunning. While AGDQ initially planned an in-person return in 2022, concerns about "increased aggression towards LGBTQ+ individuals" in Florida led to a postponement of the physical event.
For those who missed the live action, highlights included information-packed runs, a nail-biting Metroid Dread race decided by a mere two seconds, and the awe-inspiring speedrunning prowess of Peanut Butter, a remarkable canine participant. Notably, the donation total hit $2 million during a captivating Baldur’s Gate 3 run.
