With the introduction of its first OLED gaming display, Samsung is venturing into unc harted territory. the appropriately titled Odyssey OLED G8, which is loaded with features. The G8(opens in new tab) is most renowned for its lightning-quick response time, which measures in at just 0.1ms, or 1/10th the average 1ms response time of some of the greatest gaming displays available. Not only that, but this is one of the greatest ultrawide monitors available thanks to its ultra-thin form factor and excellent visual output.

The 34-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 monitor has a 21:9 aspect ratio and just 3.9mm (or 0.15 inches) thick, making it the thinnest item of its size, according to the manufacturer. For better immersion, it is even slightly curved, with a curvature value of 1800R.

The G8 monitor competes with the top high refresh rate monitors on the market with its maximum output of Quad HD resolution (3330 x 1440 pixels) at 175 Hz. Esports players may now enjoy a gaming monitor with the ideal blend of esports performance and breathtaking OLED-powered images thanks to its high refresh rate and incredibly low response rate.

Quantum Dot Technology

The company's Quantum Dot Technology is included in the G8 to ensure that colours don't appear washed out at high brightness. On the official Quantum Dot Technology page(opens in new tab), Samsung asserts that conventional OLED displays lose image quality and colour accuracy if the brightness level is set up too high. Additionally, it asserts that OLEDs degrade over time and becomes "susceptible to burn-in, or ghosts of images…"

Quantum Dot Technology uses nanoparticles to light up each pixel of the display, maintaining vivid colours at high brightness while also lessening the possibility of burn-in over time. In exchange, the G8 can boast of a "100 percent colour volume" and the ability to accurately reproduce 99.3 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space, a picture standard developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. The monitor can practically display the whole colour spectrum at 99.3 percent.

If the G8's Quantum Dot Technology wasn't enough, it also complies with the 2021-released VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Certification standard, which guarantees more accurate colour and higher contrast in the shadows. For seamless gameplay that isn't hindered by graphics card latency issues or screen tearing, gamers will appreciate AMC FreeSync Premium.

Gaming features

Beyond the rapid response rate, the monitor does include some features that are specifically designed for gamers. The first is the extensive collection of media hubs visible on the G8 user interface. In addition to the Gaming Hub, which provides direct access to various video game streaming services like NVIDIA's GeForce Now, Xbox Game Pass, and even Google Stadia, Samsung's Smart Hub also includes an IoT (internet of things) hub that enables users to monitor any device that is directly connected to the G8.

For a more immersive experience, Samsung integrated CoreSync and CoreLighting Plus RGB LEDs on the rear. There are ports for Micro HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, and a few USB-C interfaces available. A 5W stereo speaker produces sound, but little more is known about its capabilities.

Price and release date are yet uncertain, but according to Samsung, a global launch is anticipated in Q4 2022. The Odyssey OLED G8 may therefore debut as early as October, although that's probably just wishful thinking. We can't wait to get our hands on one of these stunning monitors. It is almost guaranteed that a monitor like the G8 will be pricey.
