Insomniac wasn't confident it could pull off a genuine, older-looking figure while designing the PS4 game. It's difficult to envision Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on PS4 (and subsequently PS5) without Aunt May. She has a significant role in the game, appearing in numerous cutscenes alongside other major characters. However, because to all the wrinkles, Insomniac wasn't sure if it could make a realistic and good-looking aged character in the game, according to Dan Slott. Instead, the studio intended her to just be heard on the radio as a voice.

Marvel comics writer Dan Slott, who contributed to 2018's Spider-Man, detailed the Aunt May predicament in an interview with GamesRadar. According to him, he learnt early on in the game's development that Insomniac didn't want Aunt May to be a physical character in the game. Despite the fact that Aunt May is one of Peter Parker's most important characters, the studio was concerned about her wrinkles and age.

"They were telling me the truth," Slott added. "According to them, aged characters - wrinkly figures - take a lot of work to make them appear beautiful and realistic." It's the same amount of money they'd need to make five more characters.”

So, at first, the goal was to have Aunt May call Peter and talk to him on the phone and over the radio, but she would never appear in the game as an NPC or physically rendered figure. Slott, on the other hand, resisted this decision, telling GamesRadar that he was "adamant" that Aunt May be included in the game and not just as a voice on the radio. After demonstrating to the developers that she doesn't have to be that elderly to still be Aunt May, Slott was able to persuade Insomniac to put May in the game.

"Look, Marisa Tomei [the actress who plays Aunt May in the MCU movie] isn't that elderly," Scott said. "Aunt May doesn't have to be highly wrinkled; she can be less wrinkled," says the narrator.

Of course, if you've played Spider-Man on the PS4 or PS5, you're already aware of the conclusion. Making her look less wrinkled and aged aided the developers' decision to incorporate this essential and renowned Marvel figure.
