Overwatch has had various new heroes added to its roster over the years. However, one of the original heroes, McCree is finally getting renamed. For those of you who are unaware, McCree is named after one of the former Blizzard Lead Level designers, Jesse McCree who was let go after a lawsuit. McCree is the gunslinger of Overwatch and has lots of Wild West vibes to him. Anyway, now it is getting renamed. This is due to the lawsuit that was filed against the company by California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing. This lawsuit has badly affected Blizzard. Back in August, it was announced that McCree would be renamed. However, now on October 22, Blizzard finally announced the new name for McCree, it is going to be Cole Cassidy.

It is not just a rename that is going to happen. Blizzard will also be changing nick and even adding a new backstory for the character. Blizzard has also shown a new bit of introductory text for Cole Cassidy. It says, “The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago,”. It also states that running away from his(Cole’s) past meant running from himself, and with every year, the gap between who he was and what he has become has only just increased. But, in every cowboy’s life there always comes a time where he has to stop and make a stand. It consists of a lot of other interesting text, and an introduction about Cole Cassidy. However, this is what we are going to say here.

Blizzard also said that it would not be naming any of the Overwatch characters after real-life employees. The new name for McCree, Cole Cassidy, is just going to reinforce that Blizzard is building a fictional universe that is completely different from the real world, and will also better illustrate that the creation of the game and its characters is a team effort, and not a single person’s.

Meet Cole Cassidy.
