The Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) is the premier tournament circuit for professional Dota 2 players. Every year, teams from around the world compete in a series of DPC Majors for a chance to earn a spot at the International, the biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year. However, there has been some controversy over the allocation of DPC Major slots to different regions, with some players and fans arguing that certain regions are not getting the representation they deserve.
Two players who have spoken out on this issue are Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan and Amer "Miracle-" Al-Barkawi, two of the most accomplished Dota 2 players in the world. Both players hail from the Western Europe (WEU) region and have achieved great success in their careers, including winning multiple DPC Majors and finishing in the top three at the International.
In a recent live stream, SumaiL and Miracle- expressed their belief that WEU deserves more slots in DPC Majors. According to them, the current allocation of slots heavily favors teams from China and Southeast Asia, which they feel is unfair to teams from other regions.
SumaiL wrote: "WEU deserves more slots in DPC Majors. There are multiple teams in the region that can compete at the highest level, but they're not getting the chance to prove it." Miracle- echoed this sentiment in a tweet of his own: "WEU is too stacked to only have 2 slots. We need more opportunities to prove ourselves."
Their argument is not without merit. The WEU region has consistently produced strong Dota 2 teams, with several teams regularly placing in the top 8 of DPC events. These teams include Alliance, Nigma, OG, and Team Secret, all of whom have won DPC Majors in the past. Additionally, the WEU region has some of the most talented individual players in the world, including SumaiL and Miracle- themselves.
One of the reasons they cited for this disparity is the difference in server infrastructure. In China and Southeast Asia, there are dedicated Dota 2 servers that provide low latency and high-quality gameplay for players in those regions. This gives teams from those regions an advantage in online qualifiers and makes it easier for them to earn DPC points. As the Dota 2 scene continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the regional distribution of slots is adjusted to reflect changing circumstances.
