Since 2019, for the first-time annual fighting game tournament EVO has returned as in-person event.
In fact, the competitions have also arrived along with it including the first ever MultiVersus
tournament. EVO 2022 has also included some welcome quality-of-life announcements from Bandai
Namco and SNK: rollback netcode that are soon hitting both Dragon Ball FighterZ and Samurai
Shodown.

SNK revealed the news through a brief but flashy Samurai Shodown trailer that told the players to
EMBRACE DEATH and EMBRACE ROLLBACK. These will be updated next year. Moreover, Bandai
Namco brought producer Tomoko Hiroki at the time of Dragon Ball FighterZ grand final for the
declaration that says, we have decided to implement rollback netcode to Dragon Ball FighterZ. This
news has been appreciated by the crowd as well.

Rollback netcode is a great deal in terms of online fighting games. With the delay-based netcode,
button presses don’t work properly until your opponent receive it which means both the players
watch the same thing simultaneously but they experience lag between input and action. Rollback
netcode helps player to watch their moves and at the same time can predict about their opponent&'s
activities too that will be rectified if it proves wrong. Hence: rollback.

Rollback sometimes refer to skipping the first few frames of an attack animation whereas sometimes
it can have an output of noticeable teleporting but it is still preferable in terms of delay-based input
especially when network delays can fluctuate badly.

There's an implementation of rollback that has been introduced in various games like Killer Instinct,
Injustice 2, Lethal League, Street Fighter 5, and Them's Fightin Herds. Even Spelunky 2 uses it.
Notable holdouts are Tekken 7 and Soulcalibur 6, though its addition to Dragon Ball FighterZ means
we will get to see it in future games in Bandai Namco's other fighting series too.

We don't have to wait for long as EVO 2022 will soon be launching a teaser for a new Tekken game.
