Toxicity has been a huge issue in online communities and games. And, also on social gaming platforms such as Steam. Many games such as DOTA 2, Destiny 2, etc. have their own custom profanity filters for this. Back in late August 2020, we heard of Steam taking similar measures and implementing these in their chat. Now, on October 7, 2020, it has been made available on Steam. Steam has made an official announcement regarding this. Check it out by clicking here. This new chat profanity filter is a personalized experience that is consistent across supported games, Steam desktop client, web, and mobile chat experiences. And, this is simply not just a basic filter. It has lots of customization and has gone in-depth regarding it. For starters, if you use the default settings for your chat filter, it would block strong profanity and slurs from random strangers. This would be happening in both the Steam chat and supporting games. However, if you are like me and are not affected by their words, you can even disable the filter. And, as said before you can customize it. So, it is not just either the filter is off, or it is on, unlike most games. In this chat filter, you can even set custom parameters for it. You can enable the filter for strangers, or enable it for both friends and strangers. And, you can even add custom words to the list of words that you want to be censored. So, you can have your very own personalized chat filter. The addition of this feature is pretty meaningful. This is because each has their own limits when it comes to tolerating toxicity. And, some specific words even can trigger some specific people. Now, you see why we were calling it highly customizable. You can also upload lists of words or phrases from other sources, allowing groups and communities to work together to define and share their own sets of language guidelines. This level of control is especially important given that language is constantly evolving and is used differently among various communities around the world. With Steam chat filtering, you can choose to filter the language as much as you want or not. Steam is one of the most popular and used gaming platform is not the most. Due to this, there are several types of users in it. Some will undoubtedly be toxic, and then there will be some who are sensitive to toxicity. With the addition of this, we believe that it would be really beneficial for everyone. As, if you are someone who wants to continue seeing whatever is sent to them, you can still disable the filter. Thus, nothing to hate about it.
