Mobius Digital, the creator of the acclaimed exploration game Outer Wilds, has formally ended major post-launch development. A fresh patch for Outer Wilds and its Echoes of the Eye expansion was released by the studio for all platforms, and they reaffirmed that there won't be any further "major" updates for the game.
When Outer Wilds was first released in 2019, it positioned players as explorers in a serene and charming space program. It sends them exploring a small, manually constructed solar system in an attempt to solve an odd mystery: a time loop that causes the system to reset itself every 22 minutes when the sun bursts, wiping out everything in the process. As time became the primary enemy in Outer Wilds, players were tasked with gathering information during the short time leading up to the supernova and using what they learned to crack more mysteries in the next loop. The game would go on to receive positive reviews from critics and players, as well as awards at the 2020 BAFTA Games Awards and the Independent Games Festival Grand Prize.
It has already been five years since the first release of Outer Wilds, and Mobius Digital has permanently stopped the cycle. The studio stated that Patch 4 is the final significant patch scheduled for the Switch version of the game in its patch notes for the most recent update, which takes the game up to Patch 15 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation and Patch 4 on Switch. Outer Wilds on the Switch was released in December 2023, and the Echoes of the Eye expansion was an add-on.
The most recent patch for all versions of Outer Wilds includes a new feature that a very small fraction of players had requested: the option to flip the X-axis controls for moving and using the camera. Since the X-axis is the horizontal axis, when it is toggled, moving the character or the camera to the right requires pushing the stick to the left, and vice versa. Requests to invert the X-axis are far less prevalent than those for the Y-axis, which is a commonly requested accessibility feature. Wishing the 18 players "and Jeff," who sent "very impassioned emails" to seek this feature, well, Mobius Digital hoped they enjoy their "topsy-turvy world."
The patch improved the functionality of the PS5 DualSense controller on PC, corrected various accomplishments difficulties, making it tougher to die by accident in some areas, and fixed UI glitches and collisions. It was also available for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. The patch for Switch included several graphic changes for the game, fixed a few bugs that were reported, and enhanced performance across the board. Mobius Digital stated that while it may still release smaller updates for Echoes of the Eye and Outer Wilds, it could not promise that it would have the time. The team is moving on to new projects after producing one of the most fulfilling exploration games ever made, years ago.
