The director of Tekken 8, Katsuhiro Harada, has been painfully informed for months about the grassroots effort by fans to have an official Waffle House stage in the venerable fighting game franchise. Harada is still perplexed by Waffle House's "culture" after having learned a great deal about the American Southern Diner brand from memes, viral videos, and sincere fan responses.
Harada approached his question of why fans were so insistent about a Waffle House Tekken 8 stage in a different way yesterday. Rather than inquiring as to the identity and purpose of Waffle House, as he did at the end of March, Harada instead asked his X (formerly Twitter) followers why conflicts occur at Waffle House frequently enough to justify its unconnected notoriety as the unofficial American battleground.
"Why do altercations like this one between servers and patrons occur at the restaurant so frequently? Harada retweeted a remark from a Waffle House fight video on X, saying, "I have never seen plates and chairs flying around like this, especially in Japan (and the composition is not customer vs. customer, but customer vs. waiter)." "It's not just because it's 'open 24 hours and there are many drunks,' in my opinion. What sort of society is this?
Harada continued, stating that even after 70 business trips to the United States, he would never be able to fully understand Waffle House's standing as the unofficial American fighting battlefield.
Harada wrote, "I need to know more about American society."
