When a high school polled its senior class about their favorite video game, Baldur's Gate 3 unexpectedly emerged among the more popular choices, such as Fortnite. However, it was not the appearance of Baldur's Gate 3 that left some people scratching their minds, but rather the way it looked.
It's common knowledge that the user base for games like Roblox and Fortnite is young. According to a 2018 analysis, 62% of Fortnite's users were between the ages of 18 and 24, yet given Epic's subsequent attempts to filter content by age, it's probable that these figures are off. Similarly, a 2022 survey revealed that 15% of Roblox users were between the ages of 13 and 16, and 21% were between the ages of 17 and 24, indicating a rather young user population.
But perhaps this yearbook's outcomes could use some tweaking, or at the very least an explanation. The official ranking of this high school's seniors' favorite game is as follows, based on a picture shared on Reddit:
Fortnite accounts for 75%
10% of Roblox
10% Minecraft and 5% The Gates of Baldon 3
Though the original post doesn't appear to confirm it, it is assumed that "Baldon's Gate 3" is a typo of Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. Given the game's rapid success, this seems like a very safe assumption. Redditors appeared intrigued by the apparent misspelling of Baldur's Gate, seemingly enjoying themselves as they riffed on the error.
Some Redditors appear to have an explanation for the peculiar results distribution and propose a very small sample size. The number of pupils who were asked, how many answered, and how the question was posed are all unknowns, however user TheGrimTickler estimates that there were roughly 20 to 40 students who answered in total. Assuming 20 pupils to have replied, the distribution is as follows:
For Roblox, two students
For Minecraft, two students
Fortnite with fifteen pupils
For Baldur's Gate 3, one pupil
These figures would double in the event that 40 students responded. The distribution of Gen Z-themed Baldur's Gate mods may help Larian appeal to younger players, however it's unclear how old the game's user base is.
While it doesn't quite make for a comprehensive breakdown of favorite games among late-teen players, The Kids are Alright and on Fortnite 20–40 senior students at an unidentified high school does align somewhat with current gaming habits among age groups. Apart from the age distributions found in Roblox and Fortnite, estimations indicate that 43% of players in Minecraft are in the 15–21 age group. Even while Baldur's Gate 3 has sold millions of copies and high school kids are generally uninterested in age ratings, its mature themes might have prevented it from having a more obvious effect on the specific group of students surveyed for this yearbook.
