In June 2022, Sony ushered in a new era of PlayStation Plus by merging the prior iteration with PS Now. Up until recently, PS Now had a bad reputation, and even though it was a subscription service, it took a while for it to recover, so a makeover was required to start over.

Three tiers make up PS Plus: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential gives you access to PlayStation's online capabilities and a number of free games per month. In addition to Essential's selection, Extra provides access to hundreds of PS5 and PS4 titles; Premium expands the selection to encompass earlier gaming consoles. Sony adds a ton of new PS Plus games—first-party exclusives, third-party blockbusters, and indie darlings—to each tier every month. While some months are better than others, there are usually a few really good ones. Which games have all been added to PS Plus each month?

A very wide spectrum of gamers can enjoy the free PS Plus titles in May 2024. With much to offer lovers of single-player and multiplayer alike, the list mostly consists of popular properties, albeit some of them are highly polarizing. The most popular soccer/football game available, EA Sports FC 24, is without a question the largest freebie of the month. Electronic Arts launched a new brand after losing the FIFA rights, even though it mainly follows the same blueprint as the previous series. FC 24 has a fairly mixed reputation, much like every other FIFA in recent memory, especially with regard to its online component. Ultimate Team receives a lot of praise but also criticism all the time. The mode is the worst thing to happen to the sports genre, according to some, while for others it is the sole reason to play any modern football game. FC 24 should do for someone who just wants to play a few seasons in career mode.

Bungie's most recent expansion, Destiny 2: Lightfall, is the other (relatively) multiplayer option. The Final Shape is scheduled to release in early June 2024, so it makes perfect sense that its precursor will be available on PS Plus Essential—especially since The Witch Queen was included in the list last month. Nevertheless, Lightfall is widely considered to be the low point of Destiny 2's history, with many criticizing the expansion for its plodding plot and lackluster new features. Nevertheless, given that it's a part of PS Plus, these flaws ought to be simpler to understand.

Moving on to the single-player alternatives available in May 2024, Ghostrunner 2 and Tunic are both excellent choices. The former delivers a great gameplay experience that combines fighting, platforming, and stealth, all while bringing to life a vivid cyberpunk environment through first-person gameplay and encounters that are largely one-hit kills. Tunic, on the other hand, is more of a traditional Zelda-inspired action-adventure game with more responsive combat. This 2022 release is delightful, with lovely visuals, a cute main character, and hard gameplay. A person must love the odd puzzle if they intend to finish Tunic's campaign.

Essential—formerly known as simply PS Plus—is the minimal needed to play online multiplayer games on a PS5 or PS4. A few more free PS Plus titles are added to the tier on a monthly basis. Even though these games are only available for purchase for around a month, anyone who buys them can still play them thereafter as long as their subscription is ongoing.
