Neil Druckmann, the director of The Last of Us series, has reportedly announced the upcoming installment, The Last of Us Part III. The confirmation came during the concluding moments of Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, where Druckmann hinted at the birth of a new concept for the game.

Although Druckmann stopped short of confirming active development, it was revealed that Naughty Dog, the acclaimed game development studio, currently has no other projects in the pipeline. Reflecting on the creative process, Druckmann shared that he had been pondering whether there was a concept there for years, and he couldn't find it. However, he mentioned that recently, that had changed. He stated that he didn't have a story yet, but the concept was as exhilarating as the first two, standing on its own yet weaving a cohesive thread through all three. He expressed that it felt like there was one more chapter to the story.

Released in 2020, The Last of Us Part II has been a topic of controversy because of its intricate plot twists and the inclusion of marginalized communities. Despite the divisive reception, Neil Druckmann, the creative director and co-writer for Part II, expressed contentment, stating that if they never get to do The Last of Us again, it would serve as a fine ending point.

While Druckmann remains dedicated to the series, he acknowledges Naughty Dog's flexibility, emphasizing the privilege of working with a studio that supports diverse creative endeavors. Druckmann, deeply involved in the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, notes that the second season of the show is commencing filming this month.

Notably, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, released just last month, features enhanced visuals, a rogue-like mode, and restored cut content. However, with the development of Part III potentially in progress and the recent cancellation of an online component for Part II, fans may have to wait several years for the next chapter in this gripping saga.
