Naughty Dog has revealed that the development on The Last of Us Online has ended, which has left many fans dissatisfied. The much awaited multiplayer game was supposed to deepen the plot of The Last of Us. But since it has been shelved, fans are speculating about the series' future.

The Last of Us is one of the most played video games ever. The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 were well-received by fans, and many were excited to see the in-game universe expanding into the multiplayer genre. Sadly, The Last of Us Online has been shelved for those who had high hopes for it.

However, The Last of Us Online development has officially ended, the studio announced on the official Naughty Dog website. The development of The Last of Us Online initially coincided with that of The Last of Us Part 2. The Last of Us Online has been cancelled to free up the studio to work on other projects, although Naughty Dog and its team were excited to offer the fans a new multiplayer experience. Naughty Dog had to choose between concentrating on creating new single-player experiences and finishing The Last of Us Online and offering more online support and content, as revealed in the announcement post. The studio decided on the latter after giving it some thought.

The Last of Us Online's cancellation has divided the fan base. The rumours of The Last of Us Part 3 are still circulating. Several players expressed optimism despite the studio stating emphasis on single-player games. Several comments mentioned that Naughty Dog's emphasis on narrative games may open up new IPs for players to explore. Some are concerned, though, that Naughty Dog's upcoming single-player games may actually be remasters and remakes rather than original works. It is still unclear if Naughty Dog is creating original narratives or growing well-known franchises. But gamers can be sure that more single-player games will be released soon.
