In recent years, India has cemented its position as Asia's fastest-growing gaming market, with remarkable statistics that underscore its potential as a thriving frontier for game developers and publishers. With impressive growth projections and a mobile-first approach, India's gaming landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace.
Gaming Explosion in India
The Indian Games Market by Niko Partners' 2022 report revealed an astounding 396.4 million gamers in the country, a number projected to surge beyond 630 million by 2026, generating a staggering $1.4 billion in revenue. What's even more remarkable is that India shows no signs of slowing down. The 2023 report indicates that the gaming revenue is on a continuous upward trajectory, with an expected 21% Year-on-Year increase in 2023, reaching an impressive $868 million.
Mobile-First Phenomenon
India's gaming revolution can largely be attributed to its mobile-first approach. An astonishing 96.8% of gamers in the country prefer smartphones or tablets as their gaming devices of choice. This statistic underscores the importance of mobile gaming in India's gaming industry and signals a significant shift in consumer preferences.
Several factors are driving this gaming boom in India. First and foremost, improved Internet connectivity has made online gaming more accessible to a broader audience. Simultaneously, a growing disposable income among Indian consumers has fueled their appetite for interactive entertainment. Moreover, the availability of affordable smartphones has put powerful gaming devices in the hands of millions.
Esports on the Rise
Esports, the competitive facet of gaming, is gaining significant momentum in India. The report reveals that an impressive 71.8% of Indian gamers have engaged with Esports, whether by playing Esports games, watching tournaments, or participating in competitions. The return of popular titles like BGMI and Free Fire has played a pivotal role in expanding the Esports landscape. This resurgence has led to a proliferation of official tournaments, higher prize pools, and an influx of brands eager to tap into the booming Esports market.
