If you are a fan of turn-based strategy games, then you most definitely might have heard of XCOM games, and maybe even played one of them. Not to mention, just last week we talked about a massive sale that was going on for XCOM 2. And, in that article, we also recommended getting the game. The recommendation was due to the game being quite good, and the price made it even more worthwhile. However, a recent announcement from the developer, Firaxis Games clearly indicates that the multiplayer, and other online modes of XCOM 2 will soon be shutting down. And, by soon, we mean by the end of this month itself.

Fortunately, it is just the online modes of the game that will be disabled. You can still play all the offline modes and enjoy the game. After all, the fact still remains true that XCOM 2 is quite an amazing turn-based strategy game, and fans of the genre would love playing it. However, if you enjoyed the multiplayer modes, or maybe, that was the main reason for you purchasing the game, then you would be quite disappointed.

But, then again, at this point, XCOM 2 is like six years old. The player count of the game is not all that high, and the number of players playing the online modes was even less. Running servers for a less-active game is definitely not worth it. So, it makes sense that the developers are disabling the multiplayer servers for the game. The servers wll be shut down on March 28, 2022. But, one thing to note is that only the servers of the PC version will be taken down. The game servers for Mac would still be running.

Firaxis Games also states that this decision is not something that was done lightly. But, this would allow them to refocus their resources on other projects. I mean dedicating more resources towards upcoming launches definitely makes sense, if you ask me. Who knows what these new projects are? Maybe it is Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the upcoming tactical role-playing game? That is indeed being developed by them. Who knows?
