Kingdoms of Amalur: The Return
If there is a fantastic game that suffered many years of bad luck it’s Kingdoms of Amalur:
Reckoning. For the uninitiated, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an action RPG released in
2012 for the PC, Xbox360 and the Playstation 3. It was a truly immersive RPG experience with
advanced and responsive combat of a level that we now associate with the Darksouls series. In
fact, it was widely positively reviewed by critics and fans alike when it released. Critics went as
far as to say that the game’s core combat mechanics were so tight and enjoyable that they would
not have been out of place in action game. In fact in pure progression, looting, choices, world
building and lore it truly held its own against any RPG of the time and in fact it still holds up.
The graphics were bold and colorful in comparison with the darker colour palette used by
contemporary RPGs, superb combat, extensive lore written by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore and
art aided by Todd McFarlane. So the game pretty much hit all bases and was positively received
by most if not all gamers and critics.
However, the game could not escape the drama that surrounded it. After failing to sell adequate
copies to make a profit, the company 38 Studios went bankrupt and was sued by Rhode Island
for a controversial $75 million loan. THQ Nordic acquired the rights to the game and has now
officially confirmed a remaster without any specific release date. Xbox Live lists the release on
August 11 th whereas Amazon lists it on August 18 th . Whatever the date, the cult of followers that
the game has inspired over the years can look forward to a polished remaster of an already
beautiful game. The remaster is being handled by Kaiko which worked on the Darksiders
remasters as well as Legend of Kay: Anniversary Edition. The remaster is being called
Kingdoms of Amalur: The Re-reckoning. It will have a collector’s edition and is currently
available for pre-order for the Xbox One but it will be available for pre0order soon on the PC
and PS4 as well.
