Weapon Degradation is not something almost anyone is a fan of. However, it seems that this mechanic is going to be introduced back in Dying Light 2: Stay Human. Producer Szymon Strauss explained that in this new setting of Dying Light 2: Stay Human is taking place after a gap of twenty decades from the previous game. Things have continued to wear out and people have started getting new weapons, and gears built from new materials.

So, in Dying Light 2: Stay Human, the weapons that you get would not last forever, and will be becoming useless after a number of battles. The durability is something that will be dependent on the quality of the gears, as Strauss mentioned, some would be lasting a lot longer than the other types of weapons. It still remains to be seen how this durability system works out in the game, as it can be really annoying at times. Like, just imagine, you finally get a weapon that you have been wanting for a long time, and after a few battles, you cannot use it anymore. So, yes, that can be quite an issue. However, it will also end up motivating the players to go out there and try to get various alternatives. So, the players would not always be using their favorite weapon, and instead, using a lot of other weapon types as well.

Then, there is another problem of such durability mechanics, and that is the weapon breaking in the middle of a fight. However, Strauss says that in the event this happens, the players would have to be creative and combat the zombies. He gave an example of throwing a meat bait and dropping a grenade on the entire pack. Also, talking of breaking weapons, one of the sound designers of the studio that is working on sound design for the game, actually ended up breaking his machete while recording. That authentic audio will be used in-game.

What are your thoughts on weapon degradation? I am personally not a fan of this change. The most fun part of these games is getting a godly weapon, and massacring all the zombies out there. But, then again, with degradation in play, the players will be likely to explore lots of other options when it comes to weapons, so that can be a good thing actually. Well, how it works out is still to be seen, so as of this point, we cannot comment much on it.
