Minecraft passes 126M monthly active players mark,becomes the first video game to sell over 200M copies

Minecraft was launched originally back in 2011 following a few years as a PC alpha, and its popularity increased very quickly, with Microsoft eventually buying the franchise and developer Mojang in 2014. This led to the game being converted from its original Java form into the more video game-friendly C++, which allowed for further releases on other platforms to be made much more accessible, while cross-platform play was added in later.Minecraft has sold over 200 million copies since its release almost exactly 11 years ago, with126 million active monthly players. Microsoft has also seen a big increase in Minecraft usage during the pandemic. Minecraftsaw a 25 percent increase in new players last month and a 40 percent spike in multiplayer sessions. Minecraft sales previously topped 100 million back in 2016, and the game hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. The game, which is available on every platform currently on the market, and with crossplay to allow gamers to interact with their friends’ worlds, is regularly bringing in around 126 million active players. To understand the popularity of Minecraft, it's enough to state this fact: Minecraft was the most-watched game on Youtube in 2019, with 100.2 billion views. Fortnite came second with "just" 60.9 billion views.

"When schools and businesses first started closing their doors due to COVID-19, we started thinking about the different ways we could help support the Minecraft community."

During these last few months,  Minecraft: Education Edition was free for educators to help students stay engaged, and it will remain free through the end of June. They've also launched the Minecraft Education Collection in the main game itself, with content from some of our most popular Marketplace partners, There have been more than 50 million downloads of it.
