There are other games that exhibit the slasher aesthetic besides Hunt: Showdown 1896. In Crytek's post, Lead Art Director Stefan Heinrich described the modifications made to Ghost Face's new appearance, stating, "The iconic mask is now a hand-carved wooded mask, weathered and cracked, a tattered battle worn duster replaces the robe, and to complete the look, leather holsters and gear have been added." The game's artists had to redesign the killer for an 1890s setting.

There appears to be disagreement among fans on the Ghost Face addition; some favor the Hunter's design, while others want the game to adhere to the distinctive 19th-century history. Nevertheless, in August, Hunt: Showdown 1896 broke its record for concurrent players by inviting more than 60,000 gamers, setting a new record.
