The 6v6 Marvel shooter Marvel Rivals will be available on the PlayStation 5 according to a new trailer. Marvel Rivals features a stellar cast of superheroes, and the latest video, which debuted during Sony's State of Play, announced the addition of two new characters to the roster.

Since Marvel Rivals' PC debut in March 2024, gamers have been demanding to know which platforms Marvel Rivals will be available on. Early in May, the free-to-play team battler for PC users went into an Alpha test phase; since then, data miners have only released rumors.

During PlayStation's State of Play event, a new teaser showed that in addition to Marvel Rivals arriving on the PS5, those gamers would also receive the Scarlet Spider Spider-Man costume upon the game's release, expanding the number of exclusive skins for the game. In July 2024, a brand-new closed beta test for the PS5 was also revealed. It's unknown how to register for the beta at this time, however it was disclosed that Steam and the Xbox Series X|S will also be receiving this test. Additionally, there has been no news on how crossplay will be managed thus far.

Additional Rivals For Marvel Rivals

It has been confirmed that Marvel Rivals will launch on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

PS5 closed beta testing is scheduled for July 2024.

Exclusive to PS5 owners, a Scarlet Spider skin for Spider-Man will be available for free.

Venom and Adam Warlock are confirmed to make an appearance.

Venom and Adam Warlock, two new heroes joining Marvel Rivals, were also revealed in the trailer. Fans are speculating about the identity of the third new character that the trailer hinted at arriving in the game. It appears that Marvel Rivals lacks villains, which may help focus the search. Some speculate that it might be Shuri, T'Challa's sister, who has previously taken over for him in the comic books and the most recent Black Panther movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Others believe it could be the Black Panther, T'Challa, who has already made an appearance in the announcement video.

Marvel Rivals is a 6v6 hero-based shooter that has already sparked parallels to Overwatch. The goal of this new trailer was to showcase more of the Team Up features in the game. These features allow players to collaborate with one or two teammates to share abilities and alter their strategy as the fight progresses. In this specific teaser, Venom teams up with Spider-Man to create a mobile AoE juggernaut, while Adam Warlock, Star Lord, and Mantis are shown receiving healing from their Team Up abilities (though it's unclear if Juggernaut will be in the game yet).

It's far too early to tell if this will be a "Overwatch-killer" or just a "Overwatch-joiner," but its sustained popularity seems likely given the triumph of the Marvel Rivals tournament in May and its growing Twitch audience. Although it's widely assumed that optional microtransactions for things like battle passes, premium currency, etc. will exist, Marvel Rivals is almost certain to attract more players given that it's free to play and available on the majority of major consoles.
