Apex Legends Season 20 Breakout is set to change the ranked experience. Respawn Entertainment's massive rework unveils a return to the Ranked Points (RP) system, promising changes to scoring and matchmaking. Lead designer Chris "C4" Cleroux's vision prioritizes player confidence and accessibility, signaling a massive shift in competitive play. 

Lead progression designer Chris “C4” Cleroux, in a recent press event, emphasized the essence of instilling confidence in players regarding the functionality of the system. With everyone's ranks reset to a modest 1 RP at the season's inception, the objective is clear: provide a level playing field for all, ensuring each player can learn, adapt, and progress unhindered.

Philosophically driven by trust and accessibility, Breakout introduces a scoring model that pivots towards rewarding kills while maintaining the importance of placement. Cleroux elucidates, “Each elimination you get will be worth a certain amount of RP, and that value will increase with placement.” This delicate balance ensures that engaging in fights becomes a strategic decision, with eliminations gaining more significance as your placement improves.

To further spice up the competitive mix, two bonuses come into play. The Challenger Bonus grants extra points for eliminating players of a higher rank, while the Streak Bonus incentivizes maintaining a top-five placement streak, adding an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay.

Scoring changes are just the tip of the iceberg. A comprehensive revision of the ranked match summary screen aims to provide players with a detailed breakdown of their scores, offering actionable insights to improve their gameplay.

Additionally, Season 20 discards the hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR) and embraces the transparency of using the player's RP value. As you play more, your RP value becomes a direct reflection of your skill, reshaping the competitive landscape based on your in-game performance.

Breakout does away with provisional matches and promotional trials, streamlining the ranking process. Instead, players with enough RP will seamlessly progress to the next rank.
