Blizzard Entertainment has decided to pull the plug on its highly anticipated survival game, codenamed Odyssey, after six years in development. The cancellation follows a wave of layoffs at Microsoft, impacting various sectors, including Blizzard Entertainment.

This ambitious project was initially unveiled two years ago with mere concept art and promises of a console and PC release. Blizzard's strategic move appeared to be an attempt to attract fresh talent to contribute to the game's development. However, since its announcement, Odyssey has largely remained in the shadows, with minimal details shared by the gaming giant.

Despite speculations in October hinting at a potential 2027 launch, the lack of concrete information from Blizzard kept enthusiasts in the dark. The recent revelation of the project's termination, reported by The Verge, leaves the gaming community wondering about the untold potential and the unique gaming experience Odyssey might have offered.

The cancellation coincides with the impending departure of Blizzard president Mike Ybarra and chief design officer Allen Adham, announced on Jan. 25. These leadership changes, coupled with the broader Microsoft layoffs affecting nearly 2,000 employees within the gaming division, including Blizzard staff, mark a significant shake-up within the gaming industry.

Addressing the fallout, Microsoft's game content and studios president, Matt Booty, assured affected employees in an internal memo that some individuals from the disbanded Odyssey team would be reassigned to "one of several promising new projects Blizzard has in the early stages of development."

While the demise of any game in progress is disheartening, insider reports suggest that Odyssey was far from completion. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who briefly commented on ResetEra, the game's title was indeed Odyssey, and he teased that more details would emerge in the coming days.
