Following the conclusion of the Overwatch League's last season, Blizzard is charting a new course for competitive Overwatch with the introduction of the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). This ambitious venture, formed in collaboration with leading esports and gaming company ESL FACEIT Group, promises to redefine the landscape of competitive Overwatch on a global scale.

Unlike its predecessor, the Overwatch Champions Series will eschew the franchised team model of the Overwatch League. Instead, it embraces a novel approach aimed at inclusivity, offering aspiring professional players a more accessible path to success. Blizzard envisions a model that not only provides ample opportunities for players to ascend to professional status but also introduces innovative community platforms to streamline Overwatch esports operations.

The OWCS will be divided into three regions: North America, EMEA, and Asia, each operated by seasoned organizers like EFG and WDG. These regional leagues will serve as a breeding ground for talent, with open qualifiers leading to OWCS tournaments and culminating in international LAN events. The inaugural major tournament is slated for Dallas this summer, followed by a grand finale in Sweden in November, marking the return of top-tier Overwatch gameplay to Europe.

Central to the OWCS structure is the commitment to 'always-on' events, ensuring a consistent platform for teams to evolve and prosper. This departure from the Overwatch League's exclusive outlook positions the OWCS as a more community-focused initiative. ESL FACEIT Group, a driving force behind this vision, emphasizes creating vibrant and connecting experiences across major esports titles, fostering a more grassroots-oriented competitive environment.

Craig Levine, co-CEO of ESL FACEIT Group, expressed excitement about OWCS ushering in a new era while paying homage to the rich traditions and passion ingrained in Overwatch esports. The shift from large brand-name sponsors and all-star players dominating the scene could pave the way for a more diverse and competitive landscape, as former Overwatch League stars contemplate a return to the spotlight in the OWCS.

For those eyeing a shot at glory, details about regional open qualifiers are available on the OW2 website. The stage is set for a thrilling chapter in Overwatch esports, where inclusivity and community take precedence in this exciting new era.
