Riot Games has made headlines by shutting down its publishing label Riot Forge, accompanied by a significant downsizing, affecting approximately 530 employees globally. This pivotal decision follows Riot's recalibration of its focus, redirecting energy towards live service titles, esports, and flagship projects like Project L and Arcane.
Riot Games Pulls the Plug on Riot Forge
Riot Forge, a distinctive venture by Riot Games, was a gateway for players to delve into the rich lore of League of Legends through immersive single-player experiences. The label allowed exploration of champion backstories, unveiling epic journeys, and offering an interactive window into the realms of Runeterra. Collaborating with independent studios, Riot Forge birthed six unique titles, each contributing to the evolving narrative of League. However, this ambitious initiative is now concluding, with over 500 job positions being casualties of the organizational shift.
In an official statement, Dylan Jadeja and Marc Merrill, the CEO and CPO of Riot Games, expressed admiration for the collaborative endeavors. "It’s been inspiring to see what these devs created in partnership with the Forge team," they shared. Despite the pride in the stories brought to life, the decision to bid adieu to Riot Forge reflects a conscious effort to refocus resources on internal, ambitious projects.
Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story, the final installment under Riot Forge, is set to captivate audiences on Feb. 21, available for PC and Nintendo Switch. This unique addition explores the intricacies of Bandle City, home to the Yordles, offering a more laid-back, cozy gaming experience. Encouraging player creativity, Bandle Tale unfolds the mysteries of Runeterra’s enigmatic creatures, marking a departure from Riot Forge's previous endeavors.

While the fate of other Riot Forge titles remains in the hands of players, the closure signals a temporary halt to Riot Games' foray into single-player experiences. The company leaves the door slightly ajar for potential revivals in the future, but current endeavors prioritize other ventures. As the gates of Riot Forge close, Riot Games steers towards new horizons, driven by a commitment to innovation and evolution in the gaming landscape.
