Every year, Dota 2 hosts a world championship, which is named The International (TI). The International, which is brought by the game's developer Valve, is the culmination of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC). It features 20 teams: 12 from the DPC final standings; 6 from regional leagues in North America, South America, Southeast Asia, China, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe; and 2 from last-chance qualifiers.
To promote the game, The International was first held at Gamescom in 2011. After that, it was held yearly in Seattle, the home of Valve. From 2018, it started to be hosted abroad once more. The prize pool of the event was record high in the year 2021, which was $40 USD million, which is highest in the history of any esports event. The winning team gets the prize money along with a prestigious trophy which is called The Aegis of Champions.The names of every player on the winning squad are permanently engraved on its reverse side. In the tournament's history, only OG and Team Spirit have emerged victorious twice.
Europe based OG Esports is a professional esports organisation. Founded in 2015, their Dota 2 squad won The International 2018 and 2019 tournaments, and made them world famous. They defeated chinese esports organisation PSG.LGD with a score 3-2 and became champion of The International 2018 and took home $11,234,158. Next year, they again became champions by defeating Team Liquid with a score 3-1 and took home $15,620,181.
On the other hand, Team Spirit is an organisation based in Belgrade .The group was established in 2015 and their Dota 2 squad stood first in both of the 2021 and 2023 editions of The International. In the year 2021 Team Spirit defeated PSG.LGD with a score 3-2 and became champion of The International 2021 and took home $18,208,300. In the year 2023 they again became champions by defeating Gaimin Gladiators with a score 3-0 and took home $1,521,362 and became the second team ever to claim the Aegis twice.
