The physical copy of Contra: Operation Galuga for Nintendo Switch in the UK consists only of a download code inside a box. Although some Switch games have only been made available digitally, some players and collectors believe that Konami should have stuck to their original decision because Contra is such a beloved franchise. If this is true, people who want to add to their physical collection might be thinking twice before purchasing.
Previously, Metal Gear Solid Collection Volume 1 for PS4 had some content that was only accessible through download. So this is not the first time Konami has released a game exclusively digitally. That game only came with a physical copy on the Switch, which contained the digital artbook, the Master Book, and the two NES games. There were no explanations given by Konami for why this was the case, though some people thought that it was due to space problems.
The physical copy of Contra: Operation Galuga for the Nintendo Switch is reportedly a download code enclosed in a box, as per an Amazon UK listing. At least for the North American versions of the game this will not be the case which was recently confirmed by Wayforward Technologies. It may disappoint those fans who were hoping to buy an actual cartridge of the New Contra game.
Limited Run Games stated in a recent tweet that physical copies will be available for pre-order by 2024. It is possible that fans in other parts of the world may still have to wait for more information as this deal only applies to the North American region. If fans desire, there is still a chance that a cartridge copy will be imported.
This news comes after the release of the new trailer for Contra: Operation Galuga. Returning leads Bill Rizer and Lance Bean were featured in the trailer, along with a large cast of supporting characters, including Probotector. Europeans are probably familiar with Probotector, which was Contra's alternate title in which playable characters were cyborgs instead of leads.
