Riot Games is set to redefine the landscape of competitive League of Legends (LoL) with a groundbreaking announcement. In a strategic move, Riot Games declared the integration of the League of Legends Japan League (LJL) into the Pacific Championship Series (PCS) ecosystem, slated to take effect from the 2024 season.
Changes Coming to PCS and LJL in LoL 2024 Season
The shift comes on the heels of the 2023 League of Legends esports season alterations, where the Oceania (OCE) region bid farewell to its direct seeding in international tournaments, necessitating their journey through the PCS. Seizing the opportunity to evolve further, Riot Games now adds LJL to the mix, marking a significant step in fortifying the League of Legends Esports ecosystem in the Asia Pacific region.
As the canvas of competitive play broadens, Riot Games has outlined key principles steering the metamorphosis of the PCS:
Noteworthy is the shift in player categorization; LJL players will now be considered residents of the PCS, eradicating the "import" label. However, LJL teams must maintain a roster comprising at least three Japanese players.
In 2024, LJL will conduct its domestic season in Japan, setting the stage for the top three teams to venture into the PCS Playoffs. The playoffs will witness a clash of titans, with LJL teams competing alongside top PCS and LCO teams for coveted spots at international events, including the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and Worlds.

The stakes are high, as the first-placed LJL team from the Spring Split earns a ticket to MSI, while the top two teams from the Summer Split secure a spot in Worlds. The PCS Playoffs, featuring the top three LJL teams, top six PCS teams, and the leading LCO teams, promise a spectacle of unparalleled competition in the ever-expanding world of League of Legends Esports.
