The departure of top laner Ssumday, jungler Closer, AD carry Doublelift, and support Busio marks the beginning of a comprehensive rebuild for 100 Thieves in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 season. The sole exception to this overhaul is mid laner Quid, who remains contracted with the organization until the culmination of the 2024 season.
What adds intrigue to this shake-up is the timing of the departures. All four released players will see their contracts expire precisely as the 2023 free agency period unfolds on Nov. 21, setting the stage for potential strategic moves in the offseason market.
Speculations had been rife within the 100 Thieves camp for weeks. Reports hinted at Busio's potential move to FlyQuest, while Ssumday had, in a way, foreshadowed his exit by expressing a desire to explore free agency earlier in the month. A week ago, word circulated that 100 Thieves had verbally agreed with Golden Guardians jungler River, positioning him as Closer's successor.
Doublelift's future in the LCS remains uncertain, even with the confirmation of his departure from 100 Thieves. While teams in the LCS could undoubtedly benefit from a player of his caliber, his next destination remains unreported. The North American icon, a contender for the title of the region's greatest of all time, may potentially transition to a full-time streaming role, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the offseason narrative.
As the League of Legends offseason unfolds next week, marked by the expiration of player contracts and official team announcements, 100 Thieves finds itself in a precarious position with four voids in its roster. The organization is poised to make strategic moves in the coming weeks, shaping its lineup for the challenges that lie ahead when the LCS season kicks off in January.
