In a move that promises to redefine the competitive landscape of Valorant esports, Riot Games has laid out a roadmap and a series of innovative policies for the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) Challengers in 2024. The company's global head of Valorant esports, Leo Faria, previously hinted at changes to the Tier 2 ecosystem and the integration of the Premier system in August 2023. Now, as we move closer to the new year, Riot Games has unveiled a detailed plan to propel the VCT Challengers to new heights.
Valorant 2024 Season Roadmap and New Policies
One of the headline features of Riot's 2024 vision for VCT Challengers is the introduction of a year-round calendar. In an effort to foster opportunities for aspiring players to reach the pinnacle of Valorant esports, the VCT Challengers will now span the entire year. The season will be divided into two distinct stages, commencing in January and culminating with the Ascension tournament in September. This extended schedule promises more organized play, ensuring a steady flow of competitions in the Tier 2 framework.
Perhaps the most exciting development is the introduction of the Promotion and Relegation event between Challengers League (CL) and Premier teams. Set to debut at the end of Stage 1, this event will see Premier teams battling through a bracket for the opportunity to compete against CL teams. The prize at stake? A coveted spot in Stage 2 of the CL Season, opening up the possibility for aspiring teams to climb the ranks and compete on a larger stage.
In addition to an extended calendar and Promotion and Relegation event, Riot Games is implementing a set of new policies starting with the 2024 Challenger Season. These policies are designed to add depth and structure to the Valorant esports ecosystem. Among them are Affiliate Partnerships, Two-Way Players, and Player Loans. While specific details on these policies are yet to be disclosed, they signify Riot Games' commitment to enhancing player experiences and increasing the professionalism of Valorant esports.
Riot Games is not stopping in 2024; they are already gearing up for 2025. Following the 2024 Ascension Tournaments in September, the Challengers 2025 season is set to kick off in October. This earlier start is aimed at minimizing gaps in the calendar while affording Ascension winners ample time to prepare for the next international showdown.
