Berlin Dota 2 Major 2023 Upper Bracket Quarterfinals Recap
Gaimin Gladiators 2-0 Team Spirit
Gaimin Gladiators, the Lima Major champions, won its opening match of the Playoffs against Team Spirit. Despite Spirit's attempt to counter Anton "dyrachyo" Shkredov's Medusa pick, Gaimin Gladiators dominated the game and won in just 30 minutes. Quinn "Quinn" Callahan led the team's 23-7 kill lead with a nine-kill, 10-assist performance on Pangolier. In game two, Spirit tried to counter with Axe, but the Medusa pick still dominated in the late game, leading to a 2-0 series victory for Gaimin Gladiators.
OG 2-1 Team Liquid
OG, playing with stand-in players due to visa issues, upset Team Liquid in a 2-1 victory during the Berlin Major. While Liquid dominated OG in game one, OG bounced back in game two with a 36-16 kill lead led by their three cores. In game three, OG ran over Liquid, with MinD_ControL's Tidehunter making a game-sealing play. OG's momentum from game two propelled them to victory in just 35 minutes of gameplay.
9 Pandas 2-0 Shopify Rebellion
Eastern Europe's 9 Pandas swept North America's Shopify Rebellion, surprising many who thought Medusa would guarantee an auto-win. In game one, 9 Pandas matched Medusa in the late game with a core duo of Faceless Void and Tiny. In game two, it countered Shopify Rebellion's Monkey King with a burst-heavy lineup. 9 Pandas dominated from the laning stage and never let Shopify Rebellion rally, forcing it to concede the series after 35 minutes.
Tundra Esports 2-1 PSG.LGD
In the final match of the day, Tundra faced off against a new PSG.LGD team looking to reclaim its past prestige. Although Tundra won as expected, PSG.LGD fought well, pushing the series to three games. Tundra won the first game easily, but PSG.LGD won the second game thanks to Cheng "NothingToSay" Jin Xiang's impressive performance on Storm Spirit. Tundra quickly bounced back and dominated the decider, with Oliver "skiter" Lepko leading the way with 16 kills on Sven. Tundra won the series 2-1.
Gaimin Gladiators, OG, 9 Pandas, and Tundra Esports have all secured a Top 6 finish and will compete in the upper bracket semifinals for two of the Top 3 spots. On the other hand, Team Spirit, Team Liquid, Shopify Rebellion, and PSG.LGD drop down to the first round of the lower bracket, where they will face off against other teams.
The Berlin Major Playoffs is a double-elimination format, with all matches being best-of-three, except for the Grand Finals. The event will feature 18 of the best DPC teams competing for their share of a US$500,000 prize pool and 2,700 DPC point pool, which will contribute to securing direct invites to The International.
