Bloater, a gigantic infected creature almost as big as a FEDRA tank, made his live-action debut in the most recent episode of HBO's The Last of Us. The character made a horrific slaughter that was almost unbearably bloodier just moments after entering the show. There are complete spoilers for The Last of Us Season One's fifth episode, "Endure and Survive," after the break. If you haven't seen the episode yet, proceed with extreme caution! The Bloater pursues Perry (Jeffrey Pierce) fast before severing the shooter's head from his body and tossing it aside. According to The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin, Perry was initially meant to be torn in half by the Bloater.

The Bloater in the Last of Us television adaptation, however, differs slightly from those seen in the PlayStation game's original version. The Bloater would throw bags of mycotoxin at the player in addition to thrashing them to death and chopping Joel's skull in half. The Bloater proved to be equally as terrifying on the episode despite the adjustments. Joel and Ellie will probably reject as many cities as they can in the remaining four episodes of The Last of Us season 1 in an effort to never again come into contact with a Bloater.

In the universe of The Last of Us, once a subject contracts the Cordyceps fungal brain infection, it spreads throughout their body. Before changing the body with sprouting fungal growths, the brain and its control over it are first altered. A host can go through numerous stages and experience significant physiologic changes depending on the length of the infection.

It takes years for the fungal brain infection to progress to the huge, scary Bloater stage. The enormous Last of Us beast has huge fungal growths coming from its head, making it blind, just like the deadly Clicker. The fungus spreads to all regions of the body through the host's limbs as a result of how long the infection has been present, growing stronger as a result.
