The wizarding role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy has shattered one of Twitch's all-time records just days before it actually hits retail shelves. As the open-world Harry Potter experience by Avalanche Software neared its formal release, it was a contentious subject. As with practically everything connected to the Wizarding World, the game has generated controversy, with J.K. Rowling's transphobic and cruel remarks resurfacing in discussions (something the game has directly addressed). Internal and external disagreements regarding fans' purchases of the game have resulted from this.

However, within 24 hours after its publication, it smashed a fairly big Twitch record. The first truly significant release of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, is anticipated to be among the largest titles of the year. It's not surprising to see a new game set in that universe succeeding given that the Harry Potter series dominated both the literary market and the box office.

Since it's a sizable new RPG with a relatively novel premise to hook people in with, it seems to be attractive to a lot of people—even if you don't enjoy Harry Potter. It is, however, also the subject of debate. With a peak of 1.27 million concurrent viewers on February 7, the Harry Potter RPG smashed the platform's record for concurrent viewers for a single-player game.

The previous record, according to data aggregation website TwitchTracker, was held by the wildly popular (at least commercially) 2020 game Cyberpunk 2077, which peaked at 1.14 million viewers back when it originally started. For single-player games, these figures are quite astounding. Higher peaks have been reached by a number of multiplayer games, including League of Legends (over 3 million), although they typically result from massive tournament events that develop over weeks.

What makes it so much irresistible?

Since it was initially revealed more than two years ago, Hogwarts Legacy has captured the attention of enthusiasts. A game like this has been somewhat of a pipe dream for Harry Potter enthusiasts, giving them the chance to truly realise their dreams of going to Hogwarts. Therefore, this title was going to be the subject of attention from the start. However, when you take into account that some people are hesitating to purchase the game due to the circumstances surrounding the franchise's creator, it creates an intriguing flurry of interest from all sides.

Simply put, Hogwarts Legacy is a highly anticipated game. Only a few other franchises are as popular as Harry Potter, and while there have been some good HP games in the past, this is without a doubt the most expensive, largest-scale wizarding adventure that gamers have yet to see.
