Fans of Bethesda's renowned RPG series agree with Todd Howard that The Elder Scrolls 6 should arrive as soon as possible. Despite having a vibrant community and being regarded as one of the best open-world games ever, the most current award-winning instalment of the genre, Skyrim, which debuted in the antiquated year of 2011, just celebrated its 11th birthday.
Despite the release of a teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018, Bethesda has provided almost no updates since then regarding the elusive and eagerly awaited game. In the years that followed, additional franchises such as God of War and its most recent sequel Ragnarok, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla, and Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales have produced not one, but two new instalments. While this has been going on, fans of The Elder Scrolls have been hard at work making a variety of mods to prolong the life of Oblivion and Skyrim.
The long-running franchise's next instalment is due out soon, Bethesda Director Todd Howard admitted on Lex Fridman's podcast from November 29. "Blink once if you know when Elder Scrolls 6 is coming out but are not going to tell me," Fridman instructs Howard at the start of the episode. I have a hazy concept, the developer retorted, before breaking out in laughter.
Howard claims to not know when the franchise's upcoming game will release, which contradicts recent rumours that some third parties may already be aware of that information. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority revealed a document during its inquiry into Microsoft's potential acquisition of Activision Blizzard that had the game's release date obscured. This prompted some to speculate that the UK government is aware of The Elder Scrolls 6's release date.
In any case, it appears like it will be a long before details regarding the upcoming Elder Scrolls game are revealed. Starfield, a sci-fi adventure game by Bethesda, is currently being polished and is scheduled to release in the first half of 2023. In the far future, Fallout 5 will also be released, though Howard has previously said that work on it won't start until after The Elder Scrolls 6 is finished.
