In some new lawsuit docs, PlayStation made some really offensive remarks regarding EA and Battlefield. There has been a lot of commotion about Microsoft's intention to acquire Activision for just under $70 billion since the beginning of 2022. As a result, Xbox would become the owner of well-known properties like Call of Duty, which recently had the biggest entertainment launch of 2022 and generated a billion dollars in a matter of days with its most recent installment.

Despite being released in the final two months of the year, the franchise has typically led annual sales rankings and made a killing for the publisher. This has raised worries that PlayStation would no longer have access to Call of Duty in the future, despite Xbox's assurances to the contrary.

But because of rules and other things, platform owners are now trying to justify whether or not Call of Duty is a big deal. Of course, Sony is making an interesting case for why it's crucial that it avoids being acquired by a platform holder and has brought up the competition. Sony said in a submission to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that Call of Duty is unique and that even its closest competitors, like Battlefield, can't compare.

In the petition, it is stated that Electronic Arts, one of the biggest third-party producers after Activision, has attempted for many years to create a Call of Duty competitor with its Battlefield franchise. The Battlefield brand cannot stay up, despite the similarities between Call of Duty and Battlefield and despite EA's track record in creating other profitable AAA franchises (such as FIFA, Mass Effect, Need For Speed, and Star Wars: Battlefront).

While it is undoubtedly true that Battlefield is not generating the same revenue as Call of Duty, Battlefield is also not failing either. Battlefield 2042 had a difficult start, yet despite that, it was the fifth best-selling game in the US in 2021. However, it appears Sony is adamant about keeping Call of Duty accessible to all.
