It’s Time to Upgrade Your AMD CPU!

It’s never been a better time to upgrade your PC by swapping in a new AMD CPU. Black Friday for this year takes place after CPU sales sit at a 30-year low from this year, creating CPU oversupply that resulted in steady price cuts over the last few months. Retailers need to clear out stock, thus Black Friday offers price cuts on old-gen AMD AM4 processors, leading to the best overall prices seen so far. That is great news for the builders, especially if someone is thinking of upgrading an existing AMD PC.

Intel as well as AMD rolled out new chip families, and AMD has reduced the pricing of its new Ryzen 7000 chips to 33% for Black Friday, helping the value proposition. However, high up-front costs for AM5 motherboards and DDR5 memory continue to dissuade some builders.

In the meantime, Intel’s 13th-Gen Raptor Lake chips have a clear-cut pricing and performance advantage over AMD’s Ryzen 7000 chips on the list of Best CPUs for gaming, and it also does not look like we will see any big Black Friday discounts from Team Blue for its latest-gen CPUs.

Some people might wish to sit out the current-gen chips or they do not have the cash to buy a completely new build. But you can step up to a more powerful chip with little hassle if you have an AM4 motherboard, and all the chips that have been listed below are being sold at a really low price:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600: Was $139, now $118 (save $21)

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: Was $199, now $159 (save $40)

  • Ryzen 7 5700X: Was $239, now $199 (save $40)

  • Ryzen 7 5800X: Was $249, now $229 (save $20)

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X: Was $549, now $479 (save $70)

AMD’s AM4 motherboard ecosystem was there since 2017, and you can drop most of the chips listed above into an existing board – just make sure you have enough power delivery and cooling, especially for the highest-end chips.

The Ryzen 5 5600, stands out as a great deal. It is only marked down $21 over the pricing since the last month, but that comes after multiple previous price cuts that brought the price down to $118 from the debut price of $199 five months ago. High launch pricing was the main reason for its lukewarm reception, but this is compelling for value seekers. Scoring a six-core 12-thread chip with the same performance as it is the more costly counterpart, the 5600X, for $118 is a great value if you are having an AM4 system with a Zen 1 or Zen 2 processor.

The Ryzen 5 5600 makes the Ryzen 5 5600X, which is on sale, look less enticing – these chips provide similar performance, moreover after overclocking.

The Ryzen 7 5700X is at all-time low pricing. For $199, you get eight cores and 16 threads that give the same performance as Ryzen 7 5800X on sale, leading us to declare that the 5700X was a price cut for the 5800X in disguise. The Ryzen 7 5800X is at all-time low pricing, but you should purchase the 5700X instead.

That brings us to the Ryzen 9 5950X. This CPU brings a great performance to bear with 16 cores and 32 threads that easily chew through the heaviest of workloads. This top-tier chip debuted at $799 this year, but a string of successive price reductions, including this $70 markdown for Black Friday, brings it down to an all-time low of $479. This is the most powerful CPU to land on the AM4 platform, and it is a great deal for upgraders at this price point.

Finally, it won’t be good if we do not mention the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. This is the fastest CPU for gaming that will slot into the AM4 platform, but you need to accept the tradeoff of lower performance in all other types of work.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D currently retails for $349, but that is higher than what we have seen over the past few months. We need to watch out if there are any Black Friday CPU sales on this processor and will update as necessary.
