Sony PlayStation is focusing on mobile phones after nearly three decades of concentrating on console games, including set-top and handheld.
The PlayStation Studios Mobile Division will get part of the company's business efforts, according to a statement on the company's official blog this week by PlayStation Studios president Hermen Hulst. Additionally, it was announced that Sony had acquired Savage Game Studios, a maker of mobile game studios.
The market for mobile gaming is enormous. IDC and data.ai, two industry research companies, predict that this year's spending on mobile games will total $136 billion. That represents more than 50% of the overall gaming market. Sony wants in on that, as the company has long been dependent on its PlayStation consoles.
It appears that the business is now genuinely entering the mobile industry by creating a dedicated mobile division. The move comes at a time when PlayStation 5 consoles are still excruciatingly difficult to acquire, and getting even more expensive (although interestingly, Savage Game Studios hasn't published any games yet, so we'll see what they come up with). Additionally, Sony's PS Plus membership service is still lagging behind Microsoft's Game Pass in popularity. Even though PlayStation claims it won't abandon console games, it is obvious that it wants to focus on where the money is. That's mobile for the foreseeable future.
