By posting on Instagram on August 22, Sony has now formally declared that the PSVR 2 will debut in "early 2023." This indicates that PSVR 2 won't be available over the holiday season, which is inconsistent with recent PlayStation line-up launches. However, it's understandable that things are changing with the new peripheral given the persistent component and console availability difficulties.
With mass manufacturing of approximately 1.5 million units anticipated, this information verifies earlier analyst reports that PSVR 2 will be available on store shelves in 2019. (According to Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities on Twitter). This is the first time we've heard of a confirmed launch timeframe from the company itself, which has been quiet on launch announcements this year. The PSVR 2's specifications and functionalities, however, have all been made public. The PS5's virtual reality companion will have many new experiences, including the ability of seeing your surroundings while wearing the headset, according to a blog post published last month.
The PSVR 2 is undoubtedly aiming to compete with some of the greatest VR headsets on the market with its 4K resolution of 2,000 x 2040 per eye and OLED HDR panel at refresh rates of 90Hz or 120Hz. A lens adjustment slider allows everyone to experience picture-perfect VR, while new vents prevent users from overheating while using the device. Many people had anticipated that the PSVR 2 will completely do away with cords, but those who struggled with the wires of the first system will be happy to see that the entire headset attaches with a single tether. Now we only need the PS5 stock to utilize it.
The newest headset serves as a replacement for the well-known PlayStation VR system created for the PS4, which is still regarded as one of the greatest PS5 accessories. Here, we've compiled all the information you need to know about the PSVR 2's specifications, release dates, and current news.

PSVR 2 release date and price
The PSVR 2 will debut in "early 2023," Sony said in August 2022 in a series of social media posts on Instagram (opens in new tab). This does break the pattern of earlier launches, but it is consistent with recent rumours that the headgear will be released in the first quarter of next year. Expectations for a fall 2022 release were originally high because Sony normally releases new items within the traditional holiday window. However, it's clear why we're playing the long game in this situation given component stock limitations and the need for a PS5 system to operate the headgear.
The price of the PSVR 2 has yet to be officially confirmed. But it stands to reason that the pricing will be more than the $299.99 / £299.99 of the original PlayStation VR system. This is going to be a high-end headset because Sony doesn't seem to be holding back much in its next-generation product. However, we do not anticipate it to match the high standards of the enthusiast kit for the HTC Vive. Many people have settled on an anticipated $399 / £349 - £399 PSVR 2 price due to component shortages (and the ensuing spike in price).
PSVR 2 Features
Our first look at some of the new features coming with PSVR 2 came from a Sony blog article on July 26. There are several interesting new experiences features to be thrilled about, including the ability to see your surroundings directly through your game material and broadcasting your motions in-stream.
Custom play areas: For VR headsets, defining the play area has been challenging. Some prevent unintentional harm or injury by using expensive tracking systems, while others just keep you rooted to the spot. In order to identify the precise play area, PSVR 2 will employ an unique mapping system that makes use of cameras included into the headgear and PSVR 2 Sense controllers. The technology will notify you when you approach a predetermined border too closely.
Broadcasting: Additionally, Sony said that users of the new VR system will be able to stream their gameplay straight to a stream while simultaneously broadcasting it using a PS5 HD Camera.
Cinematic mode: The Cinematic mode on the PSVR 2 will let you to play your usual PS5 games in your own virtual environment. In essence, this casts your PS5 system into your VR headset, broadcasting your material and games at up to 120 frames per second in 1080p.
See-through view: The main headset panel of PSVR 2 has front cameras, allowing you to switch between viewing gameplay and your surroundings by pressing a button on the headset or using the Control Center. According to Sony, there isn't a recording feature for see-through vision either.
