The Epic Games Store's latest free title is one that insists you stop what you're doing and acquire it right
now. The still-amazing X-COM 2 has been added to Epic's extensive collection of excellent offerings. For
the next week, you can download it for free and keep it for as long as you like.
Firaxis' 2016 release (download here) is widely regarded as one of the best turn-based tactics games
ever created. XCOM 2 builds on the success of 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which was itself a
relaunch of the classic XCOM games from the 1990s and early 2000s. You get to assemble a team to
combat the alien threat, name them after your friends, and grimace or chuckle as digital versions of
people you like/secretly detest are slain once more.
Forget about chocolate eggs and anthropomorphic rabbits the greatest way to spend your Easter
weekend is to download XCOM 2 from the Epic Store for free and liberate the world from alien tyranny.
Even though Firaxis' great strategy sequel doesn't require one, it'll receive one regardless. The game
assumed you were vanquished by alien invaders in 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown and tasked you with
establishing a scrappy resistance unit to push your extraterrestrial overlords off the earth when it was
released in 2016. Tom Senior, a PCG alumnus, was blown away by the dramatic tactical battle that
ensued, awarding XCOM 2 a perfect score of 94. Although Epic's deal is wonderful, it's worth noting that
it excludes the outstanding War of the Chosen expansion, which completely rewrites many of the game's
main rules for a more spectacular adventure. However, you can buy it, along with a bunch of other DLC,
for a very reasonable £7.99 with the XCOM 2: Collection Upgrade.
XCOM 2 isn't the only game available for free. Insurmountable, an innovative roguelike that challenges
players with mountain climbing, is belaying XCOM 2 from below. I haven't played it yet, but it has a "Very
Positive" Steam rating, which is difficult to argue with when the only cost is a sliver of hard drive space.
Insurmountable also had a huge upgrade recently, which included a tutorial and a new story, as well as
randomly generated side missions.
