After the game's introduction video began off Nintendo's February 2022 Direct, the company remained
relatively quiet regarding Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. A few pictures of the new Fire Emblem
Warriors games have surfaced online, but the true extent of the Dynasty Warriors-styled hack-and-slash
the spin-off has been left to the imaginations of fans. That is until a second teaser was released on April 12,
presenting its new protagonist character Shez and providing some insight into how it would affect the
universe established by Fire Emblem: Three Houses from 2019.
According to the new teaser, Three Houses, player-insert character Byleth will continue to be a hostile
mercenary knew as the Ashen Demon - a label they gradually abandoned in the original strategic RPG
after becoming an instructor at the Officers Academy.
A Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Demo Might Fit the Bill
It's easy to see Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes beginning portion following the same general route
as Age of Calamity, as this would also match the opening of the original Three Houses. The RPG by
Intelligent Systems opens with a prologue in which Byleth and his father Jeralt are besieged by bandits
and meet Edelgard von Hresvelg, Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, and Claude von Riegan. After Byleth fights
with the trio, the three Lords welcome their mercenary troupe to Garreg Mach Monastery, where
players can choose to teach one of the namesake three houses at the Officers Academy.
As of this writing, it is unclear where the storyline of Three Hopes diverges from Three Houses, but likely
Shez will take Byleth's position during the Skirmish at Dawn, implying that the Ashen Demon stays a free
agent who becomes an unavoidable threat owing to their lack of humanity. A trial for the upcoming Fire
Emblem Warriors might take fans through the game's first few missions, which establish Shez's role in
the current universe, only to cut off before players can pick between the Scarlet Blaze, Azure Gleam, or
Golden Wildfire routes.
This arrangement would allow inquisitive spectators to see if Three Hopes is for them, as well as give
everyone a head start before the film's June release. Each path introduces different party
members, from Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude's retainers to other returning characters like the Blue
Lions Mercedes and the Black Eagles Monica, a basic opening segment released a month or so early
could give fans time to decide where their allegiances lie. Its demo, like Age of Calamity, might be
presented alongside incentives that are applied to the new game if customers have Three Houses save
data on their device.
The demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity had the ideal scope.
The unveiling of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity came at an interesting time in Nintendo history. Due
to the consequences of the (still continuing) COVID-19 pandemic, the firm did not make any of its typical
Directs in 2020, with the exception of smaller showcases for development partners and specific game
highlights. Instead, Age of Calamity was announced on Twitter on September 8, 2020, following Paper
Mario: The Origami King on May 14 and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on August 5.
The Zelda spin-off was launched on November 20, 2020, although Nintendo provided a free Age of
Calamity demo accompanying that month's Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase on October 28.
While game demos are not uncommon for Nintendo; Kirby and the Forgotten Land had one prior to its
Switch launch in March; Age of Calamity's was extensive. It spanned the whole first act of the game,
consisting of two narrative missions with optional side material that ends right before Link recruits the
four Champions of Hyrule. Those who completed the demo may take their progress over to the regular
game, thereby completing that section of the quest early.
