Roblox is a platform that lets users with no prior knowledge build and develop their games. It
has a large and diversified collection of games from independent producers that would not
otherwise be able to get their work out there. However, this does not rule out the possibility of
AAA franchise titles making their way to the Roblox platform.
Sega of America collaborated with independent Roblox developer Gamefam to make an
officially licensed Sonic the Hedgehog game on the platform. As a consequence, Roblox gamers
may now have free access to the new Sonic Speed Simulator.
The Roblox platform, according to the creators, offered a considerable hurdle to the game's
creation. While Roblox is supposed to be simple to use, the makers of Sonic Speed Simulator
had to manage fans' expectations for both a Roblox game and a AAA Sonic release. Not to
mention the developer had to execute it all while adhering to the technological constraints of
the Roblox Studio engine.
Despite the hurdles, Gamefam and Sega of America appear to be delighted with the final
output. In an interview with Polygon, Gamefam CEO Joe Ferencz detailed how Sega aggressively
backed the project, allowing it to appear and feel like an authentic Sonic the Hedgehog game.
According to Ferencz, this is most noticeable when athletes move quickly. Ferencz commended
Gamefam's producers, designers, and animators, but underlined that Sonic Speed Simulator
would not have been feasible without substantial cooperation from Sega of America. As a
consequence, he expects the game to appeal to both long-time Sonic fans and Roblox gamers
who have never played a Sonic game before.
Sonic Speed Simulator may be downloaded via the Roblox app for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows
PC, and Xbox One. If the reports about Roblox coming to the Sony platform are accurate, it will
most likely be available on PlayStation as well. Hopefully, Gamefam's optimism is correct, and
Sonic Speed Simulator is a success with both of its target groups.
