As per a new report by Axios, Sony has decided to lay off 90 jobs from its merchandise and retail marketing teams as part of a global transformation. Despite the massive success of the PS5 Sony still remained adamant about its decision to lay off employees from the company. The company witnessed tremendous hikes in the performance of the employees and enormous growth within the last 2 to 3 years.
The layoffs based on North America’s Sony operations came into effect this week coinciding with the end of the company’s fiscal year. The merchandise team included PlayStation representatives who would interact with offline retail store locations. The retail marketing team also has seen its effect. It was shut down completely.
As per last year's reports of sony, a major chunk of purchases was successfully made online rather than in retail stores. Due to the pandemic situation people favoured making digital purchases of PS5 games online which counts for nearly 62%. On the contrary, the stores witnessed a drastic fall in purchases of PS5 Games due to covid misfortune all over the world. The layoffs seemed to be a sudden, awful approach with an unexpected notice of “transfer” offered to employees two weeks before the official announcement. Some employees were disappointed by the company’s silence and their carelessness in not informing the department about the cuts sooner. The employee expressed his view that Sony could have taken initiative to find alternative roles for its employees.
As PS5 is expected to make gigantic sales continuously, sony made an official announcement earlier this week of launching a re-branded combo punch style of PS Plus and PS Now console subscription services with a monthly program. The launch is expected to roll out in the month of June. the launch will have a three-tier subscription plan among which the most expensive plan will have access to the library of all classic PS1, PS2, and PSP Games.
