Buckle up turtleheads, your 90s arcade memories are coming back with a bang. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been a huge part of pop culture ever since their comic debut, turning into a giant media empire with movies, video games, more comic books, toys and so much more.
But, one would have to argue that the video game side of things has taken a strong downturn in the few years since the release of the 2017 beat-em-up that fared somewhat underwhelmingly in the market.
Shredder’s Revenge, the 2017 release that we mentioned earlier was actually not that bad a side-scroller, and borrowed a lot of the elements that had fueled classic successes such as Final Fight and Double Dragon. But the humdrum reception despite the critical praise led to it underperforming on the big stage, which might have led to a hesitation on shareholders’ parts to invest in further offerings.
But now, out of the blue, Japanese bigwigs Konami have taken it upon themselves to re-release the classic titles that helped the Turtles gain so much fanfare back in the late-80s and 90s with the TMNT Cowabunga Collection, a set of arcade games taken from the huge library of Turtles games. Talking numbers, the collection is set to feature 11 games, each one a very important part of the Turtles’ vast gaming history.
Personally, I remember playing the TMNT Tournament Fighters on my old NES, a downscaled but still fantastic version of the SNES game that ate away at a lot of my waking hours. And Konami promises to bring the same nostalgia and experience back to the series with this collection of games. And they have even included all three versions of this hit game, and I absolutely cannot wait.
The TMNT Cowabunga Collection is set to release on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and the Nintendo Switch sometime later in 2022.
