RimWorld, a space colonization simulator that has been available for streaming in Australia since 2013, has lately been sent to the Australian Title Role in anticipation of a playable demo. That would imply physical copies on the shelves, each of which would require an age rating. Due to the way it deals with "matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence, or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency, and righteousness generally accepted by rational humans," the Board gave RimWorld a rating of "Refused Classification," law that makes it illegal to offload in Australia.
This does not appear to harm current owners; instead, it appears to prevent new purchases. Anyone who already owns the game can play it, get updates, and use community services like the forums and workshop. The extensions Ideology and Royalty are likewise unaffected."I'm sorry for the unexpectedness of this announcement and for everyone who has been frustrated by it," Ludeon Studios says. "We're attempting to remedy this situation and make RimWorld available to everyone as quickly as possible, but we haven't figured out what that will entail or how long it will take."
While some games that have defied categorization in the interim have been removed from Steam in Australia, like Hotline Miami 2, others, such as Postal 2, Phantasmagoria, Mother Russia Bleeds, and Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, remains freely accessible despite the rating. It's unclear whether a game that has been rejected classification will be removed from digital retailers in Australia, or just kept out of physical stores and made available online.
