The host cities for the 2022 League World Championship, which will be held in three separate countries across North America, have been confirmed by Riot.
The League of Legends World Championship will return to North America in 2022, after a long wait from fans and players. The heads of Riot and LoL Esports, John Needham, Naz Aletaha, and Chris Greeley, announced all of the cities picked to host Worlds 2022 today from the Chase Center, as they did back in August at the LCS Championship.
For the first time in League's history, the greatest event on the calendar will be hosted between two competitive regions, with the play-in stage taking place in Mexico City, within the LLA's Arena Esports Stadium.
"Millions of esports fans have enjoyed both local and global events in Latin America in recent years, making it a high-potential growth industry," said Martin Blaquier, Latin America's Head of Esports. "We also have a strong ecosystem surrounding esports, with sponsors, business partners, club owners, and players working together to create a self-sustaining and forward-thinking sports scene."
"Hosting the Play-In Stage will be a momentous occasion for the area; it will be a dream come true for our fans and create the groundwork for esports in Latin America's future."
Following that, the championship will be hosted on American territory, with both the group stage and quarterfinals taking place in New York City at the Hulu Theater, which is part of Madison Square Garden, the "World's Most Famous Arena."
The Summoner's Cup will then make its first trip to Canada, with the semifinals being held in Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs and frequently ranked as Canada's best arena.
"Since the last time we hosted Worlds in the United States in 2016, the excitement surrounding League of Legends Esports has only grown." "We're ecstatic to bring the entire scope of our global sport back to North America, and, COVID permitting, welcome fans into the stands across three nations and four locations," Naz Aletaha, Global Head of LoL Esports, stated.
Finally, the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, will join the Staples Center and the Galen Center in hosting the Worlds 2022 Finals. The Chase Center is home to both the 6-time NBA Champions Golden State Warriors and the LCS' franchised team Golden Guardians.
