Nintendo has introduced a new and updated Switch model. Officially called the Nintendo Switch OLED model, it has a 7-inch OLED panel, internal storage of 64 GB, a wide angle-adjustable stand, and improved speakers.
The "newest member of the Nintendo Switch family" will be available as a Nintendo Switch OLED model on October 8, 2021 - at the same time as the Metroid Dread release - and will cost around 350 euros. Two-color variants will be available, one with a white dock and white joy-cons and one with a black dock and neon-red / neon-blue joy-cons.
New Nintendo Switch OLED model with 7 inch OLED screen
The new OLED screen is the real star of the new model. Although it retains the resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, it is now 7 inches due to a narrower screen edge - the original model has a display with a size of 6.2 inches. In fact, the new model with 102 mm x 242 mm x 13.9 mm including Joy-Cons is even a little thicker than the original Switch (dimensions: 102 mm x 239 mm x 13.9 mm). The weight is 320 g or 420 g with Joy-Cons. In comparison, the original model weighed 297 g or 398 g with the Joy-Cons.
Only a maximum of 1080p output in TV mode
Even if the screen has enlarged, the output on the television via the docking station remains at 1080p. So Nintendo has failed to upgrade to 4K resolution. Rather, the upgrade is aimed at players who use the Switch in either handheld or tabletop mode. The improved stand will also be helpful here, as it now extends broadly over the entire rear of the OLED model and can be freely adjusted for the desired viewing angle. To what extent this actually ensures better visibility when playing in daylight or direct sunlight remains to be seen.
Peripherals remain compatible with each other
The Nintendo Switch OLED model comes with a new docking station. In addition to the two USB connections and the HDMI connection, this now has a new LAN connection for the Internet connection in TV mode. The new dock is also compatible with the old switch. And the OLED model can also be used with the old docking station. The internal memory of the new Switch has been increased to 64 GB - Nintendo could have afforded a bigger upgrade from the 32 GB of the original Switch. The supplied Joy-Cons remain unchanged and are also fully compatible with the original switch. The battery life is still specified by Nintendo with four and a half to nine hours. Here, too, it remains to be seen whether, thanks to the OLED screen, a few more hours of gaming time could be gained.
